General Practitioner – Tube Fly
General Practitioner – Tube Fly – By Elliot Brass.
This is a tube fly version of the classic salmon fly the General Practitioner. Although, it is a great pattern for salmon, it’s also great for trout and steelhead. Tying this fly on a tube gives you several advantages. For instance, when you hook a fish on a tube, the fly will move up. Therefore your line will not be damaged by the fish. Also, you will have a better chance of landing the fish when using a “trailer hook” versus a traditional salmon hook. Vice for life!!
Tube fly – Easy to follow step by step instructions with photos below:
- Place your Protube nano tube on the mandrel. Wrap a base of utc 140 hot orange
- Tie in some red ice dub
- Pull the ice dub back on its self and tie in
- Tie in some polar bear (use buck tail if you cant get polar bear)
- Trim and tidy up
- Tie in 5-7 quills of Rhea on each side of your fly
- Tie in 2 strands of orange flashabou, one on the side of the fly folded back on its self, and one on the top and bottom of the fly folded back on its self. It should give you an X shape of flash on your fly
- Trim the flashabou to the length of your Rhea
- Tie in some yellow lady Amherst quills
- Use your fingernail to spread the feathers out
- Trim and tidy up
- Tie in 2 jungle cock feathers on either side of the fly
- Trim and tidy up
- Tie in a hot orange schalpen feather by the tip
- Spin on some orange seals fur dubbing
A few more steps, you’re almost there…
- Make 4 of 5 turns of the dubbing
- Wrap your schlapen up over you dubbing and tie off
- Tie in a golden pheasant tippet feather
- Spin on some more dubbing
- Make 4 or 5 more wraps of dubbing and wrap your schlapen up and when you reach the end of your dubbing tie off
- Trim your schlapen feather
- Brush out your schlapen
- Wet your fingers and pull the schlapen fibers down
- Make sure your happy with your feathers
- Tie in a golden pheasant breast feather
- Whip finish
- Place an orange cone on your fly
- Take your fly off the mandrel trim the end of the tube so its only about 2 mm longer than the cone. Use a lighter and carefully melt the tube.
- Dream of the chrome fish this fly will catch!!
