Vegetarian fly fisherman from Vancouver Island that loves nothing more than getting into the quiet areas of the wild where there'’'s only the loons, beavers, bear, elk, wolves and trout.
How long have you been fly fishing?
10 years ago my brother dragged me to a Kootenay lake that had fat rainbow trouts feasting on a hatch. I’ve been hooked ever since.
What’s your favourite type of fly fishing?
Dryfly on a river after hiking hours to get away from the logging roads.
Favourite holiday destination and why?
Anywhere where the phones and laptops can be left behind, hanging with family and friends.
Your favourite outdoor adventure story of all time?
Into thin air by Jon Krakauer.
Favourite fishing memory?
First summer run steelhead I ever caught. After driving for 4 hours out of Victoria to get to an island river I had heard might have summer run steelhead. First pool I got to after hiking down to the river had an 8-10lb steelhead at the toe of a ripple. Second cast brought my newly tied royal coachman within a couple of feet of the beast. I didn’t know the proper technique to cast, nor should anything in the river have gone after a royal coachman; but there I was, landing my first steelhead.
Why do you love living where you live?
Other than the friends and family that surround us here in Victoria; there are so many beautiful rugged natural areas that allow you to get into nature.
Princess Bride… of course
Must have accessory when in the wild?
Buck knife. Use it for everything.
Favourite camping food?
Tofu dogs with mustard
Work hard, enjoy what you do, find the best in others.
Principles I live by?
Be honest, be kind, be true to who you are.
What’s on your bucket list?
Fly fishing in Patagonia and hiking Machu Picchu.
