Fly Fisherman

Noel Fox

I grew up in Vancouver, which was the best, and now live in Whistler, British Columbia. Having grown up in a family of fishing guides and outdoorsmen, fishing has always been a big part of my life. While in college, I started my first business and never looked back. Owning my own business allows me the freedom to do the things that I love when conditions are best. Between adventures, work finds its way into the cracks. Traveling, surfing, fly fishing, snowboarding, being creative, and living outdoors are what make me happiest.

How long have you been fly fishing?

I grew up with a fishing rod in hand. Since I was a small boy, my family has held a “Family Fishing Derby.” Every year, all the cousins, uncles, and aunts get together at a different location in BC. Spending time together fishing is always a blast. For me, winning the Fyfe derby is as good as winning the Stanley Cup.

What’s your favourite type of fly fishing?

Dry fly fishing is by far my favorite. I tie a little Adam’s dry fly variation that I call a Scruffy. It’s unstoppable on my local lakes and rivers in the summer. I also love fly fishing rivers for steelhead, big tout and salmon.

Favourite holiday destination and why?

My summers are spent hiking with my beautiful wife and our dog Costa. We enjoy hiking to the many rivers and alpine lakes that are abundant in BC. In the winter, you can find me in Whistler, Costa Rica or on some other tropical beach. I’ll be surfing, fishing, and having a laugh!

Your favourite outdoor adventure story of all time?

Any time my brother Jason and I go into the wild with fly rods and backroad maps, we usually end up with a good story.

Favourite fishing memory?

My favorite memory is fishing for steelhead with my uncles, who were fishing guides. There were many days when we would catch over twenty fish. I was only a boy then, and those glory days are long gone, but I still love chasing them.

Why do you love living where you live?

Whistler is great because it is so close amazing fly fishing, snow boarding, mtn biking, etc. And if I feel like going out for a fancy dinner or to get groceries I’m a 2 minute walk away from everything.

Favourite food?

Breakfast with crispy Bacon and a coffee is always a winner.

Favourite movie?

The original Blade Runner.

Must have accessory when in the wild?

Bear Spray.

Favourite camping food?

Any meat I can cook on a stick with a can of beans and an ice cold of Lucky, or Gibbons Après Lager.

Where I call home?

Whistler

My motto?

Life is short; make the most of it.

Principles I live by?

Work less, adventure more, pack it in-pack it out, respect the environment, be nice to people & fish, always love.

What’s on your bucket list?

I would love to take a road trip to Alaska, Patagonia in Southern Chile. Helicopter fly fishing with my brothers would also be sweet. Kamchatka looks awesome! Christmas Island also looks like a blast. I need a bigger bucket!
